Because
food doesn’t loom high on my list of interests, I find other people’s
preoccupation strange. For example, the overloaded way people order coffee –
shot of this, half a teaspoon of that, a dash of something else. This is not
part of my vocabulary.
Organic
food is the other thing that doesn’t move me in particular. And speaking of
organic food, it made me wonder just how organic are we ourselves. If, for
example, a cannibal was preparing one of us for his or her dinner, what exactly
would they be eating?
According
to one study, 70% of Americans take at least one prescribed medication, while
20% of Americans take at least five prescribed medications. The elderly in
nursing homes are the most prescribed in any other setting according to Aubrey Knight, MD,
FAAFP, presentation on , “Polypharmacy in the Elderly: To Prescribe or Not to
Prescribe”. He noted ‘that certain drugs such as antibiotics
and PPIs are overprescribed in this population. He said that studies have shown
that more than half of nursing home residents had experienced an adverse drug
reaction, and that patients who are taking nine or more medications are 2.3
times more likely to experience an adverse drug reaction.’
According to
another expert ‘the main reasons of death in the United
States are adverse drug reactions. Prescription drugs lead to over 100,000
deaths annually, and more than 1.5 million cases of hospitalized people with
severe side-effects.’
If you’re an
Aussie like me, take note ‘half a million Australians are
addicted to legal substances.,,,,,,,. an estimated 82% of Australians who
overdosed last year overdosed on prescription drugs.’
So
as we shop in our supermarket for chicken, fish, or meat, should we be worrying
about how organic they are, or from what polluted areas they come from, or just
how healthy we ourselves are.
