Money Talks

As we hear of $2 million briberies happening in USA, it's suggested by some writers that bribery of all sorts has tended to be part of America's history. One of the better-known type of briberies have been in the matter of voting for political candidates.

Back in George Washington's time it seems that the bribery took the form of alcohol. Potential voters were plied with alcohol either to stay away from the voting booth, or to attend and cast their vote for a specific candidate.

According to one article George Washington was not in favour of all the drinking that was going on in America, and certainly was not interested in the shoddy business of plying people with drink just to get their vote. In 1755 he lost his first election big time. And apparently learned his lesson.

His second bid to get elected was very different from the first. Instead of expecting potential voters just to turn up on the day and vote for him because he was such a great guy, he did what other candidates were doing, provided them with alcohol. A lot of alcohol. 50 gallons of rum punch, 46 gallons of beer, 28 gallons of rum, and 34 gallons of wine, to be exact.

He won.

St. Valentine's Day - 1 Week to go

On the 14th February we'll be celebrating St. Valentine's Day. In many countries in the world lovers will be expressing their love for their partner or their spouse or their would-be lover with greeting cards, flowers, chocolates, and all sorts of gifts - from inexpensive and funny to expensive and serious.

The French, as would be expected, draws lovers to their shores in boat loads since they have a celebrated lover of their own. Some hundred years ago Charles, Duke of Orleans, was captured by the English in one of their frequent skirmishes and imprisoned for 25 years.

While in prison he wrote over 60 poems to his wife addressing her as 'my valentine.' Needless to say, some of the poems were not the cheery types written today as the poor duke was stuck in various prisons, including the Tower of London, with no hope of release till the King chose to let him go. Here's one, for example/

My Very Gentle Valentine

Alas, for me you were born too soon,

May God forgive my jailer

Who has kept me from you this entire year.

However, now and then his poetry is more in the style we expect a Valentine's Day poem to be:-
