Marry in May

According to the jingle - 'Marry in May, and you'll surely rue the Day'.

However, it hasn't stopped Prince Harry who is to say 'I do' on 19th May, and other couples in the past who are now celebrating their Wedding Anniversary - some of them their fortieth.

If you're one of them, here's a poem, included in one of my Celebrant Resource books, '600 Readings' you could use in your Wedding Renewal Ceremony.

WE'VE lived for forty years, dear wife,
  And walked together side by side,
And you to-day are just as dear
  As when you were my bride.

I've tried to make life glad for you,
  One long, sweet honeymoon of joy,
A dream of marital content,
  Without the least alloy.

I've smoothed all boulders from our path,
  That we in peace might toil along,
By always hastening to admit
  That I was right and you were wrong.

No mad diversity of creed
  Has ever sundered me from thee;
For I permit you evermore
  To borrow your ideas of me.

And thus it is, through weal or woe,
  Our love forevermore endures;
For I permit that you should take
  My views and creeds, and make them yours.

And thus I let you have my way,
  And thus in peace we toil along,
For I am willing to admit
  That I am right and you are wrong.

And when our matrimonial skiff
  Strikes snags in love's meandering stream,
I lift our skiff from the rocks,
  And float as in a placid dream.

And well I know our marriage bliss
  While life shall last will never cease;
For I shall always let thee do,
  In generous love, just what I please.

Peace comes, and discord flies away,
  Love's bright day follows hatred's night;
For I am ready to admit
  That you are wrong and I am right.

What happened in 1967

Apart from giving a couple a certificate to commemorate the renewal of vows, I also give a certificate summerising some of the interesting happenings in the year they married.

The couple whose Renewal of Vows Ceremony I conducted today have been married for fifty years. Here are some interesting happenings I found for the year 1967when they married. Incidentally, the couple met at the Cloudland Ballroom, Brisbane. Married in Redcliffe 8th April 1967. And renewed their vows in Redcliffe 8th April 2017.

·        In Australia 100,000 couples exchanged their wedding vows.

·        Roy Emerson won the Australian Open men’s singles while John Newcombe won the US Open.

·        In South Africa Dr. Christiaan N Barnard performed the first heart transplant.

·        In London, the Barclay Bank put in the first ATM Teller Machine

·        In Fashion the mini skirt appeared

·        The first live telecast football grand final was between Canterbury-Bankstown and South Sydney at the Sydney Cricket Ground.

·        General Motors Holden exported its 100,000th car and launched its first compact sedan, the Torana

·        Normie Rowe won the inaugural King of Pop award

·        Johnny Farnham released his 'Sadie the Cleaning Lady'.

·        Popular TV shows included Prisoner, General Hospital, Jeopardy!

·        Popular singers included The Beatles, Elvis Presley, The Bee Gees

·        Red Handed won the Melbourne Cup

·        Prime Minister Harold Holt disappeared while swimming in heavy surf at Cheviot Beach, near Portsea, Victoria

What happened in the Year you Married

Couples may renew their Wedding Vows for different reasons, and at different times. But the most popular time when married couples renew their wedding vows is on their Wedding Anniversary. In particular such significant anniversaries as the 5th, the 10th, the 25th and the 50th Wedding anniversary.

Because it's not a legal ceremony the couple can introduce a variety of steps into their ceremony,  making it uniquely their own. Here is the complete text of one Renewal of Wedding Vows Ceremony I've conducted.

Since we like to commemorate such significant ceremonies in a concrete way, at the end of the Ceremony I usually hand the couple a Renewal of Wedding Vows Certificate.

But apart from this commemorative Certificate, I also like to give the couple a Certificate which outlines the significant events that happened in the year they were married. When I first thought of the idea I wanted to narrow it down to what happened on the Wedding Day itself. But found it too hard, so changed it to what happened in the year instead.

One ot the things I've included - and which got a laugh when I read it out when presenting the Certificate to the couple - was the year when mini-skirts became fashionable! Another one was what horse won the Melbourne Cup that year. (You have to live in Australia to appreciate that one)
