A gift from the French to
the Americans, the statue arrived in New York in 1885 and was intended to commemorate friendship
established between France and America during the American Revolution. It symbolises
freedom and democracy.
The statue is that of the Roman goddess representing
liberty. In the raised right hand the Lady of Liberty holds a burning torch,
symbolizing enlightenment, while in the left hand, placed close to the body,
she holds a table inscribed with the date of the American Declaration of
Independence.
From the crown of the
statue, one can view the whole of Liberty Island on which the statue stands, as
well as the complete skyline of New York city.
Made out of copper, the
statue is 46 metres (151ft 1inch) tall, standing on a pedestal 93 metres (305ft
1 inch) high. There are 192 steps to the top of the pedestal from the ground,
and a total of 354 steps from the ground to the crown of the statue. It is the
tallest statue in the United States. Lady Liberty’s crown consists of 25
windows and seven spikes representing the seven oceans and seven continents of
the world.
The statue was shipped in 214
crates and comprised 350 individual pieces. Altogether it took four months to
assemble the Statue which was designed by Sculptor Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi. Helping with the construction
was Alexandre Gustave Eiffel who later created the Eiffel Tower.
The Statue of Liberty has made her appearance in many
films including ‘Godfather’, ‘Planet of the Apes’ and ‘Batman’.
