Social Media: Dangerous to Health - Yours and Others

According to statistics, around 30% of driving accidents in Australia are caused by drink driving. It joins New Zealand, U.S.A and Canada, as one of the worst countries for drink driving. Considering that these countries are also higher income countries, drinking seems like a status symbol. Almost like – Have money, will drink.

The other thing that Australia is noted for is gambling, in which it is the leading country in the world. Gamblers report a loss of $1.128.00 per adult. At one time almost 1,000 gamblers were registered to be banned from gambling, many of whom breaking the ban when able.

It seems to the addictive habits of drinking and gambling – dangerous to themselves and others – another one is now being added. It’s called Social Media addiction.

According to some experts, while at least one third of world population is using social media, some 210 million people suffer from media addiction. Like other addiction it manifests itself as excessive usage followed by problems in the real world.

You can become depressed, have difficulty sleeping, suffer broken sleep by the necessity of checking the phone during the night instead of sleeping, alienate yourself from real social interaction. Other health problems might include sore fingers and wrists, headaches and sore eyes.

This is what you could be doing to yourself. When it comes to others, social media addicts can be as dangerous as other addicts. Drivers who can’t leave their phones alone while driving are both killing and injuring others.

Cell phone distraction causes 2,600 deaths and 330,000 injuries in the United States every year, according to the journal's publisher, the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

At the other extreme is the Social Media addict who gets himself or herself killed while walking and paying no attention to what is happening around them.

The US Governors Highway Safety Association estimates that there were 6,000 pedestrian deaths in 2016, the highest number in more than 20 years.

Social Media addicts are encouraged to use their brains instead of their fingers, and live to see another day.
